The Old Smithy is situated in the main street of Arrowtown and my parents bought it in the early 1980’s. Mum and Dad started out by selling Antiques which they sourced from all over New Zealand.  Along with the other shops in the Queenstown Lakes District, they opened 7 days a week, well before the rest of New Zealand started doing so.When more and more international visitors started coming to the area, Mum and Dad introduced a collection of New Zealand made Paua Shell Jewellery. I remember my Dad telling us a story over the dinner table one night.
An international visitor, who spoke very limited English, had come into the shop that day.  Pointing to the cabinet that displayed the Jewellery, he asked for a discount.  Dad shook his head and said “no”. The gentleman pointed again at the cabinet and said, “I take”. Confused, Dad asked him which piece he wanted. The reply was “all”. That cemented the transition into Jewellery!
I came home to Arrowtown after spending 14 years living and working in South Africa. I loved being home, but it took another six months before the penny dropped that it was the perfect time to buy the business from Mum and Dad.  15 years on here I am. In the past, when I have been asked about selling online my answer was always that the nature of the product is quite unique and the colour and patterns in the shell are always so varied that you risk not getting exactly what you ordered.
